Book review
“Alma Santista” a book by Jair Bortoleto.
“It´s a big surprise to realize that the preoccupation with the arts is getting into the brazilian surfing culture. All the process of making and the result of the book Alma Santista, with all the feelings that comes into this as a historical document, causes emotion for those whom know the history and the representativity of Santos city and their icons inside the brazilian surfing scene”, as told by Reinaldo Andraus, one of the most respected surf journalist from Brazil, in an informal talk about the book of the photographer and poet Jair Bortoleto.
None for less, the Black and White portraits of Jair Bortoleto transform the turning of the pages of the book in a smooth experience, in what the happiness of the colour shots of the characteristics sights of Santos – as the Pensil Bridge at São Vicente, the first of Brasil, the Devil´s Throat, where the biggest waves from Santos breaks, the statue of Osmar Gonçalves, known as the first brazillian surfer, "Mornings of March" at José Menino´s beach and the biggest beach garden of the world, between other images that bring emotions to the surf lovers.
Alma Santista tran the reader through all the Santos city surf generations, since the beginning of everything, with the north-americans Thomas and Margot Rittscher, up to the newest, like the young Noa, future of Santos´s surf. Important names and idols give us a pure grace through the lens of Jair, like Cisco Aranã, Homero Naldinho, Picuruta Salazar, the “Twin” brothers, Thyola, Marcos Bukão, Jairzinho de Oliveira, the Wolthers brothers, mixed with other icons from the town, as the artists Mai-Brit and Santana. All of this, plus the invited photographers Berenice Kauffmann Abud and Jair E. Filho, with the poems of the author Jair, and also the texts from the deep thinkers Ucho Carvalho, Herbert Passos Neto and the publisher Romeu Andreatta, all "soul santos surfers", make the book a masterpiece about Santos.
Alma Santista is a beautiful love declaration from Jair Bortoleto to the city that owns the most original beach culture of Brasil, an artist with a candid essence, who searchs on the expressions and movements, the art of the surfer's feelings and love, the “pureness of imperfection” from the situations that comes across his eyes.
